Subject: General Elections, 1998 – Counting Programme.

Sir,

I am directed by the Commission to state that the programme for counting votes in respect of the General Election to Lok Sabha and to certain State Legislative Assemblies, 1998 shall be as follows:

(i)For the State of Meghalaya, the date of counting is 23^rd February, 1998 at 8.00 a.m.

(ii)For All other States and Union Territories, excepting Jammu and Kashmir, the date of counting of votes is 2^nd March, 1998 at 8.00 a.m.

(iii)For the State of Jammu and Kashmir, the date of counting of votes is (1) 8^th March, 1998 at 8.00 a.m. in respect of –
2- Srinagar, 4- Ladakh, and 6- Jammu Parliamentary Constituencies; and (2) 9^th March, 1998 at 8.00 a.m. in respect of –
1-Baramulla, 3-Anantnag, and 5- Udhampur Parliamentary Constituencies.

It shall be further noted that the votes for the Assembly Constituencies for which general / bye-elections are being held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha constituencies shall also be counted on the same dates.
