COUNTING
OF VOTES
Counting
assistants and Counting Table
Election Commission's letter No. 470/96 JUD-II/ dated
1.2.1996 addressed to the Chief Electoral Officer of
all the States and Union Territories.
Subject:- General Elections-1996.
I am directed to state that the Commission is anxious
that counting of votes should be completed at the
earliest without however compromising with the
accuracy and fairness of the counting process. It
has, therefore, directed that in order to accelerate
the place of counting and complete it as
expeditiously as possible, the Commission directs
that the number of Counting Assistants at each
counting table in a counting hall should be increased
from the present number of two to three
2. Where the number of contesting candidates exceeds
twenty, the number of counting Assistant at each
counting table may be increased even up to four as
considerable time is taken in unfolding of ballot
papers, making them into bundle and counting the
ballot papers contained in such bundles accurately.
3. The receipt of this letter may kindly be
acknowledged.
